Birding The Richmond Bay Trail

Yesterday we were birding  the Bay Trail between Point Isabel Regional Park and just past Meeker Slough in Richmond.  We were there just before and for a couple of hours after high tide hoping to see Clapper Rails. No rails but the shore birds continue to come in increasingly larger numbers. Like last week most plentiful were Willets. The bird of the day was American Kestrel, a bird I haven’t often seen when walking along this route.

The best observation of the day was at the bridge near the beginning of the trail on our return. There was a Great Blue Heron and Two Double-Crested Cormorants fishing along with a Snowy Egret patrolling the shoreline. All were close to the bridge in very good  late afternoon light. Three of the photos in slideshow are from the bridge. We identified a total of 33 birds. To see today’s bird list go to Pt. Isabel Bird List 9/22/13.
