Threatened Devils Hole pupfish are making a comeback

The Pahrump Valley Times reports

Biologists say populations for one of the world’s rarest fish are increasing.

Scientists recently counted 175 Devils Hole pupfish — the most they’ve observed in a spring count in 22 years. They’ve been tracking populations of the rare Devils Hole pupfish, which live in the upper 80 feet of a deep water-filled cavern and sun-lit shallow pool in Ash Meadows National Wildlife Refuge just west of Pahrump, for 50 years.

 Lyrid Meteor Shower Peaking Tonight

EarthSky reports

When to watch: Late evening April 21 – or late evening April 22 – will be best. Before moonrise! The predicted* peak is 4 UTC on April 22. And the peak of the Lyrids is narrow (no weeks-long stretches of meteor-watching, as with some showers). Unfortunately in 2022, there’s a bright moon in the sky on the peak morning. Note that it’s a waning moon. So – on the night after the peak (late evening April 22 to dawn April 23) – there will be less moon, and so you might try that night, too.

Radiant: Rises before midnight, highest in the sky at dawn. Your best bet for watching the Lyrids in 2022 is to watch in the hour before your local midnight, before the moon rises or gets very high in the sky.

Doctors in Canada can prescribe free annual national park passes

NPR reports

A walk in the park may be just what the doctor ordered.

A new program launched last month in Canada gives some doctors the option of providing patients with a free annual pass to the country’s national parks as part of an effort to increase access to nature and the health benefits to be found outside,

PaRx, a health initiative launched by the BC Parks Foundation in 2019, partnered with Parks Canada to provide doctors across four provinces with an initial run of 100 passes that can be prescribed, The Washington Post reported. The typical park prescription program allows doctors to write more general prescriptions for time spent out in nature; two hours a week, at least 20 minutes at a time, is what PaRx director Dr. Melissa Lem suggests, according to the Post.

Bird flu outbreak: Experts say take down feeders

EarthSky reports

A highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) – or especially severe bird flu – is causing sickness among both domestic and wild birds across the United States. So the Raptor Center at the University of Minnesota recommended yesterday that people in U.S. states with HPAI take down their bird feeders and bird baths for a couple of months this spring to help decrease the spread of this virus.

This is an old story but is another example of how serious plant smuggling is and that there are serious penalties for smuggling plants

CNN reports

A woman who strapped nearly 1,000 succulents and endangered cacti to her body in an attempt to smuggle them into New Zealand has been sentenced to 100 hours of community work, the country’s biosecurity ministry said.

Wenqing Li, 38, who also goes by the name Wendy, was caught bringing plants and seeds from China to Auckland International Airport, where the goods were seized, on two occasions in 2019.

How Nature Becomes a Casualty of War

The New York Times reports on impact of war on the environment

Waging war is an act of destruction. And, studies suggest, it’s one that disproportionately affects the planet’s most important ecosystems. From 1950 to 2000, more than 80 percent of the world’s major armed conflicts took place in biodiversity hot spots, areas that are rich in native species but under threat,
