Are you a horticulturist with a passion for wild collected plants in a natural, physically challenging setting? We are looking for a skilled horticulturist to immerse themself in the upkeep, care, development and maintenance of a collection of documented South American plants that represent a long history of plant collecting on this continent. This position, in a world class, University botanical garden requires impeccable attention to documentation, advanced knowledge of horticultural methods, and demonstrated understanding of research collections.
JOB AVAILABILITY: Horticulturist – Museum Scientist
Brief description:
The scope of this position involves the maintenance and care of wild species plant material in the Garden’s South American Collections. Rotating weekend nursery duties year round. Other misc. duties as assigned.
Responsibilities:
Oversight of the Garden’s South American plant collections as stated above in coordination with Garden management and the Curation Department. This includes the supervision of students and/or volunteers working to assist with various duties. Assist on an as-needed basis with special projects and events as assigned. The position requires accurate and up to date documentation of the collection in our database which stores detailed collection information and produces plant labels.
Requirements & Qualifications:
B.S. in Horticulture and/or equivalent experience
Demonstrable experience in horticulture and landscaping; knowledge, skills, and abilities
Basic technology and mechanical skills
Demonstrated ability to work with a diverse population
Excellent verbal and written communication skills
Strong organizational skills
Special Preferred Qualifications:
Experience supervising and/or working closely with a volunteer and/or student pool
Broad knowledge base in South American native plant biology, ecology, taxonomy and outdoor care. Good collection documentation/plant records experience highly desirable.
Professional association(s) with related plant organizations, institutions, and individuals.
