Southern California Wildflower Notes 3/9/11

A few notes from a recent Where to Photograph in California (Calphoto) post.

  • brilliant screaming orange poppies are blooming on hillside of many areas including Walker Canyon.  The I15 freeway and streets in that area were a total zoo.  Thus many coastal region areas are just green with short herbs as the cool weather has kept many plant species dormant waiting for warmer weather.
  • Mojave Desert areas are also covered by short dormant plants without wildflowers.
  • Driving in on I10 from Joshua Tree where we spent the week,  there were lots of desert gold sunflowers in parts of Coachella Valley.
  • west of North Palm Springs where the wind farms are located at San Gorgonio Pass, are vast fields of desert dandelion and I could make out other species as well.
