Yesterday we went two miles up Mitchell Canyon on a hot sunny day. Just as one of the docents had reported, it was an especially good year for the Mt. Diablo Fairy Lanterns/Calochortus pulchellus. It was also a good day for birds and butterflies. The trail is a heavily wooded and the shade was much appreciated. Trees include Valley Oak, Blue Oak, Buckeye, and Gray Pine. Also there is plenty of poison oak. There are Buckeye trees that are very flowery.
