Christmas Bird Count Is Coming

The 114th Christmas Bird Count (CBC) will take place from December 14, 2013 through January 5, 2014. Tens of thousands of volunteers armed with binoculars, bird guides and checklists go out to take part in the annual Christmas Bird Count. The Christmas Bird Count makes an enormous contribution to conservation. Audubon and other organizations use data collected in this longest-running wildlife census to assess the health of bird populations and to help guide conservation action.

CBC aims to capture an early winter snapshot of bird populations over many decades and offer birders with an enjoyable social birding experience. Viewed in comparison with other long-term, continent-wide, monitoring programs, such as the Breeding Bird Survey, CBC data give us an understanding of the dynamics of bird populations across North America during the early winter. We are also gaining an understanding of the status of bird populations in Latin America, the Caribbean, and U.S. Minor Outlying Islands
