Birding Martin Luther King Regional Shoreline 11/2/13

Today the Audubon “Fall Birds of the Bay Area” field trip went to Martin Luther King Jr. Regional Shoreline including Arrowhead Marsh. At the marsh we hoped to see rails. We did hear Clapper Rails but never did get to see them.  The grassy area across from the marsh produced the bird of the day. When looking at American Pipits one bird looked different; it was a Lapland Longspur. We saw hundreds of Scaup and over 100 each of Willets and Surf Scoters. Overall it was a very productive day as we had over 50 species. It was a good mix of waterbirds, shorebirds and perching birds. I even found a Painted Lady butterfly. To see today’s list go to: Martin Luther King Regional Shoreline Bird List 11/2/13

And when I got home there was a Nuttall’s Woodpecker in a Redwood tree in my neighbor’s yard and a Townsend Warbler in my backyard.
