Today I went birding on the Richmond Section of the Bay Trail from Pt. Isabel to Shimada Park and back. I was able to identify a total of thirty-three birds. I was there before and during high tide, which was 6.2 feet today; the highest of the month. Much of the lower areas were underwater. I saw my first Surf Scoter and Elegant Tern of the fall season. It was also the first time I have seen Western Meadowlarks and Bushtits on this part of the Bay Trail. I think it is also the first time I didn’t see Canadian Goose. Butterflies included Monarch, Anise Swallowtail and to my surprise a Pipevine Swallowtail (also a personal first for this area). To see today’s bird list go to: Richmond Bay Trail 10/17/13
