The New York Times reported researchers have found that the Greater Wax Moth or Honeycomb Moth (Galleria mellonella)has the world’s best hearing. It can sense sound frequencies of up to 300 kilohertz. Humans only hear sounds up to 15 to 20 kilohertz. Dolphins, known for their superior sense of hearing only hear sounds up to 160 kilohertz. It is believed that the reason the moth’s hearing has evolved to such a high level of sensitivity is to detect predators.
