A Really Big Day

Cornell Lab of Ornithology has a story and video about Team Sapsucker counting 264 bird species in single day in Texas last year. They will be trying to beat that record this year.  You can see the story along with a short video of all the birds they saw on an hour by hour basis at: Cornell Lab eNews: What’s It Like to Find 264 Species in One Big Day?.

I was watching the video and reading the story for inspiration. I will be participating in a Walking Big Day at the Point Reyes Birding Festival where we will see how many birds we can see and hear traveling only by foot. The group will walk through wetland, oak and fir forest, grassland and riparian habitats as we walk from the Giacomini wetlands by Olema Marsh through varied habitats to the ocean at Limantour Beach.  The hike will be around 11 miles and goes up and over Inverness Ridge, a gain of 1000 feet.  Last year we had a 103 birds. Here is my post from last year A Point Reyes Walking Birding Big Day

If you are interested in going to the Pt. Reyes Birding Festival it is April 26 to April 28.  For more information on the festival including schedule and registration go to: Point Reyes Birding Festival.
