Bay Nature had recent article http://baynature.org/articles/jul-sep-2010/habitat-and-humanity on the work of the East Bay Park district in preserving habitats and managing rare species. Along with discussions of habitat protection for terns and clapper rails, it discussed the preservation and development of the Skyline Serpentine Prairie in Redwood Regional Park in Oakland. It included work to preserve the Presidio Clarkia. Amazingly, the project only started in 2009. To learn more click the above link and to see some of the results look at the earlier postings:
