Fall color viewing safety tips:

  • For fewer crowds, avoid weekends. Be patient and expect slow traffic, especially on Saturdays and Sundays.
  • Check the weather forecast.
  • Have a full tank of gas, snacks, water, camera (with extra film or SD cards), binoculars and a good map. Cell phone coverage is not reliable.
  • Bring a sweater and rain jacket. Temperatures can change quickly at high elevation especially in the afternoons. Afternoon thunderstorms are common.
  • Mornings are best for photography. Dramatic lighting occurs soon after dawn.
  • Observe the rules of the roads such as posted speed limits and no passing zones. Watch for pedestrians and wildlife.
  • Exercise caution while driving, when pulling off and onto the main roadways.
  • Park your vehicle in designated parking/rest areas. Do not impede traffic or block gates. Do not stop in the middle of the road to take photos.
  • Follow us on Facebook and twitter (@usfsarp and @usfsclrd) to see the latest in fall colors
  • Have fun and stay safe!

Some roads and trails remain closed due to flood damage that occurred during heavy September rains in 2013. Visit the Flood Recovery Page for information. Please use caution in all affected areas.
