A Southern California Wildflower Trip Report 3/31/16

Where to photograph in California – Yahoo Groups (Calphoto) has the recent Southern California trip report

3/27/16 – Owl Canyon (out of Barstow): Not much blooming; some Phacelia crenulata, and (unfortunately) some tamarisk.

3/28/16 Hwy 127 north of Tecopa: fields of Geraea canescens and Phacelia crenulata.

Some residual fields of Geraea canescens along Badwater Road south of Badwater.

Natural Bridge Canyon: Gravel Ghost, Desert 5-Spot, Phacelia crenulata

3/29/16 Road to Dante’s View: nice displays of Golden Evening Primrose and some kind of yellow Asteraceae type deal. Up top there was Phacelia crenulata, Phacelia fremontii, fiddleneck, sage, Mojave Aster, paintbrush, and some kind of Astragalus.

Falls Canyon: this hike was a wildflower highlight. Lots of Gravel Ghost and Phacelia crenulata, a good deal of rock nettle (most past prime but maybe half a dozen bushes had nice blossoms), Desert 5-Spot, Desert Mallow, some Mimulus bigelovii and Lesser Mohavea, assorted other flowers.

Ubehebe Crater: Lots of Brown-Eyed Evening Primrose; some Purple Mat, Eschscholzia glyptosperma, and some gilia type deal.

3/30/16 Emigrant Canyon road: lots of Golden Evening Primrose, various others

3/31/16 190 just west of Father Crowley Point: nice displays of some kind of gilia; also Desert 5-Spot, tiny ground-hugging daisies, and Langloisia setosissima.

Alabama Hills: Movie Flat is happening now. On the Arch Loop I saw tons of Desert Dandelion, some Lasthenia species, Lepidium Flavum, Chaenactis something-or-other, and white Tidytips; a few types of Phacelia; one or more gilia species; Fiddleneck, sage, Rock Cress, paintbrush, and some stuff I haven’t identified yet.
