Conservation has an article on the important role seashells play in ecosystems and the environmental harm that collection does. Research in Spain found as the number of tourists at beaches increased that the number of seashells decreased from collection. Important roles of seashells include:
- algae take shelter in shells
- birds use them to build nests
- hermit crabs carry them as armor
