Antelope Valley & Gorman Wildflower Updates 4/24/14

Submitted by Spencer Westbrook  author of A Guide to Wildflower Locations of Central and Southern California

I drove Hwy 138 from Gorman, which has a bit more color along the Post Road but the action is in the Antelope Valley. Many fields along Hwy 138 and most major roads are carpeted with poppies and a few other flowers but the poppy show is worth the drive.

It appears the poppies are at peak right now and with rain showers forecast for the next day or two the show may be prolonged a while longer. More and more color appears each time I return to the area.

The very nice displays at Munz Ranch Road / Elizabeth Lake Rd have peaked and the area is appearing to look dry although the poppies continue to put on a nice show.

The Poppy Reserve continues with a nice display and the roads in the area provide more of the same.

There is a huge poppy field at the West 290th, Tejon Ranch gate area, several hundred acres in bloom but the wind here make for dusty, unpleasant conditions for photography.

Pictures are poppies at West 245 Ave in Av (0585) and Munz Ranch Rd/Elizabeth Lake Rd hills

I’ve been to Gorman when the hillsides were a blinding orange. But that was in a wet year. Why this year? Don’t understand this. Did they have some local thundershowers? Just past Gorman (going north from Los Angeles) is the turnoff to Frazier Park and the road through the Cuddy Valley to the old Condor lookout on Mount Pinos, in the Los Padres National Forest. Memories from my teenage years. Pinyon-Juniper habitats, Black-throated Gray Warblers, Lawrence’s Goldfinches; then higher up, Condors.

It’s been more than 40 years.
