Wired Science reported on Indonesia creating the world’s largest sanctuary for Manta Rays. Manta Ray hunting and export is banned within the entire 2.3 million square miles of Indonesia’s exclusive economic zone.
The sanctuary was not created simply out of conservation concerns for the Manta Rays but out of economic realities. Indonesia earns an estimated $15 million annually in Manta Ray tourist revenues compared to the Ray fisheries, worth about $500,000.
