King Tides January 29 to 31

On January 29 to 31 there will be King Tides. These are the highest tides of the year. King Tides offer an interesting opportunity for birders. The high tides force marsh birds out of hiding. During the New Year’s Day King Tide six or seven Clapper Rails were seen along the Richmond Bay Trail near Meeker Slough. In addition to the Bay Trail,  Arrowhead Marsh at Martin Luther King Jr. Regional Shoreline is a good place to look for rails.

The California King Tides Initiative encourages people to photograph and document the impacts of the tides across the state so we can see what life might be like as sea levels rise. Read more about at California King Tides.

Of course on the reserve side of this is the fact that the lowest tides of the year occur providing some excellent tidepool photography and scenes of areas generally under several feet of water. Spencer
