NPR reported on the high number whale species off the Southern California from Long Beach. It is now a good time of year to see gray whales migrating south. However, this year many other species are having high number of sightings as well including orcas, humpbacks, blue whales, fin whales and sperm whales.
Scientists are not sure why there are so many whales this year. One possibly theory is that climate change has shifted currents resulting in billions of tons of squid and krill to this part of the coast and that the whales have changed their migration route to feed on them. A second possibility is that this previously polluted bay is getting cleaner and is supporting more marine life.
