Birding California’s Central Valley

The fall Audubon birding class finished with a weekend trip to the Central Valley. Saturday we went to Colusa River Preserve, Woodbridge Rd., Staten Island and finished with end of the daylight at Sacramento Wildlife Refuge. Sunday we again drove the five-mile loop road at Sacramento Wildlife Refuge and then went to Colusa Wildlife Refuge where we spent time at the viewing platform and then drove the three-mile loop road. The highlights of the trip were the thousands of Geese flying at Sacramento National Wildlife preserve and the many ducks as well as geese at Consumnes, Sacramento and Colusa . Other top sightings included:

  • a Snipe at Consumnes
  • the Sandhill Cranes at Staten Island and Woodbridge
  • Cackling Geese and a Merlin at Staten Island
  • Blue Snow Goose and Blue Ross’s Goose at Sacramento Wildlife Refuge
  • a  Peregrine Falcon with prey at Colusa
  • a Great Horned Owl (seen only by part of the group) at Colusa

Below are the Bird Lists from the trip. I chose to use one of the participant’s lists as they were more accurate and had additions by the trip leaders:
Colusa NWR -Auto Touring Route
Colusa NWR – Viewing Platform
Sacramento NWR- Auto Tour Route
Sacramento NWR
Staten Island
Woodbridge Ecological Reserve
Consumnes River Preserve
