Birding Lake Merritt 11/11/13

Today I went birding with seven members of the Audubon “Fall Bay Area Birds Class” with Rusty Scalf at Lake Merritt in Oakland, CA. There were  thousands of Scaup, hundreds of Double-crested Cormorants and many other birds. The highlight was getting to see two Barrow’s Goldeneye, a first for me. There were also at least six Black-crowned Night-Herons and a Belted Kingfisher. One of pluses of birding Lake Merritt is the opportunity to get close to many of the birds and get good looks. As a group we identified 34 species and a hybrid gull. It is possible to get good bird close-up photos without having a super-telephoto lens. Here is today’s list: Lake Merritt Bird List 11/11/13.
