Major Decline In Moose Population

The New York Times reports that North American moose populations are die off at an alarming rate. The moose population is Minnesota is dropping 25 percent per year.

The exact reason is not known. Most theories suggest climate change is part of the problem.  Possible causes:

  • increased number of ticks,which are a harmful parasite
  • heat stress due to warming temperatures
  • brain worms
  • liver flukes
  • destruction of forest by pine bark beetles
  • unregulated hunting
