First Flowering Plants 100 Million Yrs. Older Than Thought

BBC Nature reported that scientists from Switzerland and Germany believe that the first flowering plants occurred 100 million years earlier than previously thought. They have studied six types of pollen fossils that they date from the middle Triassic period (245.9 to 228 million years ago). Previously the oldest plant pollen had been dated from the early Cretaceous period (145.5 to 99.6 million years ago). This raises the question of no pollen producing plants in the period of 100 million years between these findings.
