Blue Ridge Parkway & Great Smoky Mts. Fall Foliage 10/3/13

Asheville NC Fall Foliage Color Leaf Report 2013 has the following  October 3, 2013 update for the Blue Ridge Parkway and Great Smoky Mts:

October 3, 2013 Update

Most all leaves are still green except in the highest elevations. For the next week, find the best color above 4,500 feet elevation. We found the best color now at Mt. Mitchell State Park (fully open) and that section of the Blue Ridge Parkway (see pic on right). Another area for color is Rough Ridge on the Parkway near Grandfather Mountain. See fall color photos from October 3!

What about the Federal Government Shutdown?

  • The Blue Ridge Parkway is OPEN. However, all of its facilities, campgrounds, picnic areas, visitor centers and Folk Art Center are closed. Hiking trails & overlooks along the Parkway are open. Mt. Mitchell is open since it is a state park – so a great place to stop for food and restrooms!
  • In Pisgah and Nantahala National Forests, fee areas and info centers are closed. Hiking trails and most waterfalls are open!
  • State parks and forests (including Mt. Mitchell, NC Arboretum, DuPont State Forest and Gorges State Park) remain open.
  • In the Great Smoky Mountains National Park, the very scenic US Highway 441 (Newfound Gap Road) remains open. All other roads, campgrounds, visitor centers, and picnic areas are closed.
