Natural History Wanderings

Today we went birding at Lake Merritt with friends and walked around the entire Lake. The best birds are at the end near the islands and nature center. The bird of the day was a Belted Kingfisher, who gave was very visible in good light. There were also over ten Black-crowned Night-herons including some juveniles and many Double-crested Cormorants. There was also  group of about ten pied-billed grebes together, both Pelicans, a Cooper’s Hawk, Snowy and Great Egrets and a Great Blue Heron.  Also many Mallards, Canadian Geese, and Rock Pigeons. We had eighteen wild species plus what were probably formerly white pet ducks as well as ducks that had hybridized with mallards. To see the full list go to: Lake Merritt Bird List.
