BBC Nature had a story Are these animals too ‘ugly’ to be saved? on which endangered animals get public support for protection based on appearance. Animals with good camera appeal such as pandas, gorillas and tigers get lots of public attention for protection.
Two features that popular animals have are large and forward facing eye. People find them more impressive and the faces seem more human-like. Animals with large noses and other less aesthic feature by human standards receive less attention and thus less efforts at protection.
