ScienceDaily reported on how Beavers use scent to assess risk. Beavers are territorial animals. They establish and defend territory to have access to food, mates and nesting areas. Beavers will fight to protect their areas and they use their sense of smell to determine who constitutes a real threat.. They are able to assess the age and social status of other beavers by the scent of their anal secretions. Using this information the beavers can make decisions as to who they must chase out of their territory.
