BugGuide.Net is a great online knowledge base of insects, spiders, and other related creatures. Each posting includes photos, classification, common and scientific names, description and identification information, endangered status, range, habitat, season, food and life cycle for each species.
The site description states
More than just a clearinghouse for information, this site helps expand on the natural histories of our subjects. By capturing the place and time that submitted images were taken, we are creating a virtual collection that helps define where and when things might be found.
We capture never before seen behaviors and we have photos of species that you won’t find anywhere else on the web.
Two useful features are ID request where you can post a photo of bird and can help with identification discussion forums.

I use them all the time for identification. Its important to note they like lateral and dorsal views for identification not portraits!
