Talks and A Bird Walk With David Lukas

I recently wrote about a new birding David Lukas’s Bay Area Birds book, an informative guide about the birds of the Bay Area  last month in the posting A Most Useful Guidebook For Bay Area Birds. David is doing a series of talks and a birding field trip in the north bay next month.

April 9, A Talk on Bird Feathers and Bones

Napa-Solano Audubon Chapter
Vallejo, 7 p.m.
www.napasolanoaudubon.com

Have you ever found a bird feather or bone and wondered what you could learn from it? This talk will cover bird bones, feathers, and muscles and how they work together to help a bird fly and live in its environment. Expect to learn about the inner and outer workings of birds.

April 10, Bohemia Ecological Preserve

LandPaths of Sonoma County
Occidental, 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.
http://www.landpaths.org/eventdetails.aspx?EventId=14069

Join the docents and volunteers of Landpaths as we spend a lovely morning looking for birds on the new Bohemia Ecological Preserve, located west of Sebastopol. This is a rare opportunity to see a beautiful landscape that is accessible only on formal hikes such as this one. The walk is free but you need to signup to reserve a spot.

April 10, Bird Biology and Breeding Season Behavior

Wildlife Rescue Center Napa County
Napa, 6 to 8:30 p.m.
Contact Carol Poole, cpoole1135@yahoo.com

This evening event will be an unusual hybrid that combines some bird biology (how bones, feathers, and muscles work to help birds fly), along with a free-ranging discussion about as many aspects of the bird breeding season as we have time to cover, including topics like courtship, nesting, egg-laying, and chick development. This is a free talk for wildlife center volunteers but the public is welcome (donations requested).

April 11, Mystery of Bird Song

Marin Audubon Chapter
Tiburon, 7:30 p.m.
www.marinaudubon.org

A very popular talk about the magical world of bird songs and how to understand the many reasons that birds vocalize.
