Texas Wildflower Sightings Report 3/30/13

Texas Wildflower Sightings has the following new reports:

W. Brenham-Hoddevill Rd at FM 1948 Great spot in the area , nice quite country roads in the area. One friendly Trooper. Nice fields and range of flowers.

La Grange , TX 71 Columbus to Austin
Plants Seen: Pink evening primrose, Texas Bluebonnet, Indian Paintbrush
Hwy 71 is in bloom! Not quite as dense as prior years but beautiful color all the way from Columbus to Austin. Odd how it changes once you turn onto I10.

Navasota , TX Just South on SR 6 from Navasota
Plants Seen: Bluebonnets
Saw nice patches of BB making a loop from Hempstead W to Brennham on 290, NE to Navasota on 105 and S on 6.
Found huge field of BB on W side of 6, just S of Navaosota. Row of trees was hiding field, but row of cars told me something big was there. Be careful, Speed Limit is 70 there.

From  962 and 3347 – Hill Country – WildflowerHaven Community.

drive up 962 today to what are usually some of my favorite places during good wildflower years. I live in Dripping, so this is pretty close to home for me. While on 962, I crossed over 281 going north, took a left (west) on 3347 and hoped to find some wildflowers. There were bluebonnets, actually more than I anticipated, but they were still not full enough to make me pull over, set up the tripod, and give it a go. From 3347, I made the loop of 308, 310, 310A, and back to 3347. Last year I found a spectactular bluebonnet field  near the end of 310A with a pond in the distance, as well as some fields of bluebonnets where I photographed deer. There were sprinkles of individual bluebonnets here and there, but the area was void of any substantial wildflower blooms. I stopped to check out what plants were out there, but did  not find many bluebonnet rosettes hugging the ground. I returned to 3347 and traveled further west where it becomes Althaus-Davis Road, but still did not find much. By this point, the rains came so I headed back…

I’m hoping since the bluebonnets don’t seem to be materializing, perhaps we’ll get a bloom of red or gold later in April. We need some rain, too.
