Friday we went birding at Martin Luther King Jr. Regional Shoreline including Garretson Pt. and Arrowhead Marsh with birding class friends. The bird of the day was Blue-winged Teal, who made appearances at the both the beginning and end of the day at Garretson Pt. along with a number of water and shore birds. It was obviously Spring today. The American Avocets, Horned Grebes, Black-bellied Plover and Great Blue Heron, were showing off their breeding plumage. I saw my first Barn Swallows of the year. Rails were neither seen nor heard at Arrowhead Marsh. We found a total of 45 different birds.
We also saw a seal and a few butterflies including a Monarch. There were also a few native plants in bloom including California Poppies, Blue-eyed Grass, Bush Monkeyflower and several nice specimens of Ceanothus. Two attractive exotics blooming were Lavatera and Rockrose.
