Two Wildflower reports for Texas from the Nature Photographer’s Network Central States forum
Took a day trip Monday 03/25/13 to scout out wildflower locations in the Navasota/Independence/Burton/Brenham/Chappell Hill area. Several small Bluebonnet and Paintbrush patches along Hwy 290. Best area found was on wildflower loop trail in Washington-on-the-Brazos State Historic Site, see photo. Another site worth mentioning was the Old Baylor Womens College on FM390 not a great number but a few different varities. Overall it seems we were about two weeks early. Will try Hill Country in mid-April.
Just got home Monday from a week of driving around in the Hill Country of Texas looking for wildflowers. Drove over 1200 miles. This year isn’t going to be a good year like 2012 and 2010 were. Could find Texas Bluebonnets along the main highways but hardly any on back roads. Mainly found small patches and narrow strips along the pavement. Looked east of Austin and around Kerrville. Did see more along Highway 29 just west of Mason, TX and that area may have some potential.
