One of my favorite places to see Sandhill Cranes and Tundra Swans is Staten Island in the Sacramento River Delta. National Geographic has an article on the bird-friendly farming practices developed on Staten Island which is now owned by the Nature Conservancy.
Some of the bird-friendly farming practices are
- allowing birds to forage uninterrupted
- leaving grain waste in the field postharvest
- flooding the unused fields
