Natural History Wanderings

Here are the findings from our backyard bird count today. There were six of us looking and listening. Three of us were from the  “Birding by Ear” class and it was the first year we used bird sound to help find and identify birds.  We did visually see all the birds on our list except for the Red-breasted Nuthatch. We found 21 different birds and identified all but a gull flying overhead to species. The birds of the day were the Nuttall’s Woodpeckers, which were the first time we have seen them in our neighborhood, Townsend’s Warbler and Cedar Waxwings.
