NPR reported on hundreds of Turkey Vultures descending on the town of Leesburg, VA. This happens every three to five years. The cause is unknown. The vultures produce large amounts bad-smelling waste that can pose problems for pets and children.
The Migratory Bird Treaty Act protects Turkey Vultures requiring the local police and residents to call in the federal Department of Agriculture to chase the birds away. The USDA wildlife specialist uses fireworks to chase the birds out of tress. He then hangs a dead vulture in the roosting area which successfully discourages the birds to stay away. They are an important part of our ecosystem. Their “white wash” is sterile and poses no threat. Too bad they are so unappreciated.
