ScienceDaily reports that new research reveals that Swans suffer from many more crash landings and hip injuries than previously believed. Through the use of computerized tomography there is now more accurate identification of these injuries.
It is believed that most of these injuries are due to landing on hard surfaces. Although some of the injuries may be due to emergency landings due to air turbulence, a large number of the injured birds are found near roads and railroad tracks. It is theorized that the birds may misjudge shiny rails and road surfaces as water and are coming in for landings to hard and fast.
