Today I went birding at Hayward Regional Shoreline with the Golden Gate Audubon “Fall Birds of the Bay Area” class with Rusty Scalf. We set up a car shuttle and walked 3 miles from the north end to the south end of the area. A highlight for the group was seeing Harris’s Sparrow, which is a bird of middle North America and rare for the West Coast. Harris’s Sparrow is Canada’s only endemic breeder.
In addition to Harris’s Sparrow, Elegant Tern and Surfbird were also first time views for me. I had a total of 49 species. You can see my bird list for today at Sandy’s birdlist for Hayward Regional Shoreline 10/3/12
