Charlie Russell of California Wildflower Hikes just posted a wildflower update at Calphoto for a hike he did at Mt. Diablo State Park:
I just came back from a relatively short hike on the North Peak trail starting from the Devils Elbow, near the summit at Mt. Diablo. It is getting hot, but there were a lot of wildflowers. 30 species. Baby Blue Eyes, Red Larkspur,Woodland Star, Checker Lily, Milkmaids, Goldfields, Shooting Star, Hounds Tongue, Brewers Phacelia, Snakeroot, Devils Lettuce, a violet not sure which yet, Several kinds of Lupine, Ceanothus, Wallflower, Narrow leafed sunflower, Chia, Rock Cress, a Lotus not sure which, Blue Dicks, Tidy Tips, two kinds of Fiddleneck, and more. And a LOT of poppies – on the way up, not too far after the entrance north gate, there are a couple of hillsides that are just covered. Very beautiful, and I think that this will remain nice for another week or two even with the hot weather. I’ll have pictures on my blog, but it may take me a week to sort it all out.
