Research Dispels Belief About How Birds Navigate

The LA Times reports a new study disproves the theory that birds navigate by detecting the Earth’s magnetic fields. It had been believed that pigeons detected magnetic fields due to iron-rich cells in their upper beak. The new study found these cells were only an immune system cell that fights of infection and were not helping the birds to navigate.
