Science Daily has a report on the difficulties European birds and butterflies are having in adapting to climate change. In a study over the last few years researchers found
- Europe has become warmer and set temperatures have shifted northwards by 250 km
- Butterflies have adapted by moving on average 114 km north
- Birds have only moved 37 km north
It is believed that butterflies adapted faster than birds due to their shorter lifespans. Birds move slower due to their preference to return to the same breeding grounds each year. The different rates of adaptation create serious concerns as caterpillars and insects are major food sources of many birds. Read more at Science Daily Climate adaptation difficult for Europes birds.
