Taboo Not Honored As Madagascar’s Lemurs Hunted

An article in the Public Library of Science (PLoS) One journal reports that the Lemurs of Madagascar are under great threat as large numbers are now being hunted for meat.  Traditional taboos against hunting the lemur used to protect them. Legends stated that killing lemurs would bring bad things to you and your family. However the increase in immigrants and outside influences have overridden the traditional taboos. The hunting of lemur is especially devastating as they take up to nine years reach maturity and reproduce only once every two to three years.
