Wildflower Tours of Table Mountain

Updated

The California Department of Fish and Game announced naturalists will be leading spring tours of the North Table Mountain Ecological Reserve near Oroville, CA. Tours will focus on the area’s spectacular wildflower blooms, unique geology, beautiful vistas and rare vernal pools.  Tours are every Saturday in March and April, one at 10 a.m. and 1 p.m. Each tour is limited to 25 participants. Advance registration is required and will be available on the DFG website after January 3 at www.dfg.ca.gov/lands/er/region2/northtable.html. Tours are popular so early registration is recommended. If you are unable to register online or need more information, please call DFG Interpretive Services at (916) 358-2869. I think that you’ll find flowers, but I can’t say how good it will be as it has been a couple of weeks since I was there. Sorry!

When you arrive at the parking lot there are flowers right there. In fact, there were some neat things right in the parking lot and roadside. When you go through the fence, turn immediately to your right and go to the exposed lava rock jumble and look closely. That is where I found the Bitterroot (the first picture in my blog article at http://wildflowers.russellramblings.com/2012/04/north-table-mountain-wildflowers/). They are very low. In fact, EVERYTHING is very low this year.

The area around the big oak tree wasn’t very colorful when I was there, but it was very wet so there may be some later flowers.

If you head out to the west just a hundred yards or so, there were quite a few Goldfields and Yellow Carpet in the wet areas, and Sierra Mock Stonecrop in the rockier areas. Lupine were pretty scarce this year when I was there.

Once you get there, this is one of the most accessible wildflower areas. Lots of flowers within a short distance, no strenuous hike. However, if you head further west and get into the areas where the streams are, and the canyons, there is a lot more variety.

This just wasn’t the most prolific year, compared to prior years.

are there any blooms left for this weekend? I was hoping with the weather we had this year blooms would last a little longer. Also, are the flowers viewable with out the hike?

    thank you

As for the current condition I don’t know and haven’t spoken with anyone who has been there very recently. You might try calling North Table Mountain Ecological Reserve call 916-358-2869. Also you try the Oroville Chamber of Commerce as they sometimes know about the wildflower bloom Toll Free 800.655.4653.
There are road side flowers on the drive up and near the parking lot but to enjoy the preserve to its fullest you do need to walk. I know I have found some of the best flowers walking out to the area near the waterfall.

The Table Mountain web site says that registration won’t be available online until January 3rd. The blog article you referred to says to call them if you can’t register online for some reason, but the registration site says to only call for non-tour reasons…
