U.S. Fish and Wildlife Office press release: biologists have confirmed the sighting of two Whooping Cranes near Hayesville, North Carolina. This is the first documented case of Whooping Cranes wintering in Northern Carolina. Whooping Cranes are one of the rarest birds in the world with an estimated population of 525 to 550 birds. We just saw the pair flying over hwy 64 @ 5:10pm just east of Tingles heading towards the dam.
