Approximately 1500 Eared Grebes died in southern Utah. The migrating birds mistakenly thought a Wal-mart parking lot, football fields, and highways were bodies of water. Volunteer rescuers helped save over 3,000 more Eared Grebes by bringing them to local ponds. Wildlife officials believed that stormy weather conditions likely confused the large flock of migrating birds.
