California Considering Protecting Black-backed Woodpecker

The Sacramento Bee reports that California  wildlife officials have voted to give the black-backed woodpecker candidate status for  protection under the California Endangered Species Act. The Black-backed woodpecker nests in burned trees and eats the insects that the burned trees attract.  If given protected status this would decrease the amount of burned trees collected.  As California’s population of the woodpecker is the state did not give interim protection during the study period.
