531 U.S. “At Risk” Species Are Not Protected

Sceince Daily reports that many “at risk” species in the U.S. are not on the official U.S. Endangered Species List. They report that research by University of Adelaide published in Conservation Letters compared the International Union for Conservation of Nature (ILCN) Red List with the U.S.  Endangered List .  Here are some of their findings:

  • 531 American Species that were on the IUCN red list not protected by the U.S. Endangered Species Act (ESA)
  • 40% of  red list birds were not protected by the ESA
  • 50% of red list mammals were not protected by the ESA
  • 80-95 % of red list other species were not protected by the ESA
