First Night-flowering Orchid Discovered

The BBC reported the discovery of the first ever night-blooming orchid.  It is named Bulbophyllum nocturnum and was discovered in Papua New Guinea. The bloom period lasts for only one night .  Although its pollinator is not known, scientists believe it is possibly a nocturnal fly. The  Bulbophyllum genus has about 200o species and is the largest of all genera in the orchid family. Read more at the BBC News Botanists discover remarkable night-flowering orchid.

How strange. In such a gigantic, diverse and cosmopolitan family; a family that includes underground saprophytes! They only just now found a night blooming species? How very strange.
