Recent research by Alexandra Harmon-Threatt at University of California, Berkeley reveals that native bees are attracted not only to native plants but alien plants as well. She learned that bee behavior is motivated more by nutritional need than specific plants. This is good news for bee survival and farmers concerned with the loss of pollinators, but not necessarily for making native plant preservation a priority. The best situation for bees is to have a variety of plant species for food sources.
