An Asian Botanical Garden
Today we went to Quarryhill Botanical Garden. We found , berries, fruits, late season flowers and the beginnnings of fall foliage. Even though it was Saturday there were very few visitors making the garden a very quiet and peaceful place. Among the non-flowering highlights were a Great Blue Heron and California Sister and Buckeye butterflies. Today I discovered there is a Calochortaceae plant family. (according to Wikipedia “It is recognised by only a few systems of plant taxonomy, including the Dahlgren system”)
Beginning in 1987 through the collection of seeds from Asia, Quarryhill has matured into a well established Garden with a rich Asian Flora. Quarryhill has one of the largest scientifically documented collections of wild source Asian plants in the world. Quarryhill supports preserving endangered species, collection of seeds of endangered species, education and research. The garden is in Sonoma County outside of Glen Ellen.
