Lake Tahoe Residents Attempt To Stop Bear Hunt

Residents of the Lake Tahoe area have gone to court to stop a state of Nevada approved bear hunt.  Nevada has issued 45 licenses to hunt bears although the hunt is supposed to be limited to 20 bears total and only one out of six can be female. It is prohibited to kill a female accompanied by a cub.   Hunters may use dogs but not bait.

Residents of Tahoe are concerned about the safety factor for humans and impact on tourism.  NoBearHuntNV.org   filed a lawsuit in Carson County, Nevada last week to stop the hunt.   NoBearHunt also contends that Nevada did not The LA times reports that did provide adequate wildlife management justification for the hunt or use proper scientific methods when estimating Nevada’s Bear Population.

“The lawsuit alleges state wildlife commissioners adopted the hunt’s regulations illegally because they failed to provide proper public notice or examine the potential negative impact on the local tourism-based economy. It also raises concerns about safety in an area popular for downhill and cross-country skiing in the winter, and hiking and mountain biking most of the rest of the year. “
