Large numbers of Geese and Ducks along the Central Valley section of the Pacific Flyway
This year promises to be a very good year for central valley birding. The wildlife refuges are reporting large numbers of ducks and geese. It is believed that the decrease in harvesting the rice crop and lack of water in the Klamath Basin have resulted in the central valley refuges seeing exceptionally high numbers of white-fronted geese and other birds. Mike Carpenter, a USFWS biologist at Sacramento National Wildlife Refuge states
“This autumn could be an all-time high for white-fronts,” “Non-hunted species like lesser sandhill cranes are also benefitting from excellent habitat conditions.” “Recently, I counted a record number of sandhills foraging at Delevan NWR near Maxwell.”
